Embedding YouTube Videos in Survey Questions

Stream YouTube videos — both regular videos and Shorts — directly inside mEMA survey questions using a simple shortcode in the question’s long text field.

How to Use It

Adding the Shortcode

In the long text field of a question, paste the following shortcode and replace VIDEO_ID with the actual YouTube video ID:

[youtube id='VIDEO_ID']

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find the YouTube video you want to embed and open it in a browser.

  2. Copy the video ID from the URL — it’s the part after ?v=. For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvL1339luv0  →  ID is: hvL1339luv0

  1. Paste the shortcode into the long text field of your question:

[youtube id='hvL1339luv0']

  1. The video will appear embedded when the survey is taken. Works with both regular YouTube videos and Shorts.

Important Notes

No internet connection at survey start

If a white space appears where the video should be, it means there was no internet connection when the survey was started. Exit and re-enter the survey after regaining a connection for the video to appear.

Android — do not navigate away from the video

Do not tap any links, suggested videos, or buttons that lead to a different video or a creator’s channel. These will open YouTube inside mEMA and there is no way to return without restarting the app.

Android — fullscreen not available

Full-screen mode for embedded videos is not supported on Android devices.

No ads

Videos embedded via this shortcode play without ads.
